Lake Vermilion County Park consists of 1,000 acre Lake Vermilion. Power boating, water skiing, tubing, and jet skiing are the most popular activities of the summer months. However, Lake Vermilion offers some of the area's best large-mouth bass fishing. Anglers compete in club sponsored tournaments or open tournaments held each Thursday evening in the summer months. Waterfowl hunting is allowed in season. The monthly pontoon boat rides are reserved weeks in advance. These rides offer excellent opportunities to view the native wildlife and to tour the lake. Lake Mingo is a 170 acre lake located in Kennekuk County Park. It is also a popular fishing lake that attracts local fishing clubs. Visitors may rent pedal boats, canoes, or Jon boats to enjoy the lake. Waterfowl hunting is also allowed on Lake Mingo. In the winter, ice fishing is popular. Stephens Beach has been permanently closed and is currently a bank only fishing area. No boats will be allowed in the area. Docks will be maintained and ropes will define the boundaries for fishing by boat. Both lakes have concession buildings where snacks, drinks, and bait may be purchased. Each lake has modern boat docking facilities and ramps that can handle two boat launches. Illinois State fishing regulations apply. Additional V.C.C.D. ordinances apply for both lakes. Boat decals are required for admittance on the lake. Boat decals are available by bringing your boat registration to the Visitors Center at Kennekuk County Park, Lake Vermilion Boat Ramp or Lake Mingo Boat Ramp.
